The brush pot is naturalistically carved, the sides are finely and deeply carved in relief with scenes of scholars and attendants engaging in various leisurely pursuits in a setting of terraces and pavilions amidst pine and rocks. One scene depicts two scholars gathered under pine around a table and playing Chinese chess, to their right an elderly scholar is assisted by a young boy walking up a rocky stairs, with mountains and pine trees carved to the background, the wood is of rich reddish-brown tone with natural wood crevices. Qing Dynasty period.
