Provenance: Property from an important family collection, Los Angeles
The material of this piece is of warm-toned yellow jade, resembling the color of chestnuts, often referred to as "sweet yellow jade" during the Ming and Qing dynasties. In the Ming dynasty, Gao Lian's "Zunsheng Bajian" mentioned, "Jade of sweet yellow is the best, followed by sheep-fat white. Yellow is considered a moderate color, not easily obtainable, and white is a biased color; sometimes it is also present." During the Qianlong period, yellow jade was frequently used for the most significant jade artifacts in the court, created by skilled craftsmen, indicating its favoritism by the emperors. The Qing Dynasty yellow jade carvings, due to its rare raw materials, are mostly found in smaller sizes. This particular piece exceeds 8 inches (20 centimeters), indicating a disregard for cost in its selection of materials, making it quite rare. It stands as a representative work of jade carving from the Qianlong court. A comparable piece is the Qianlong Yellow Jade Beast Face Patterned Zun in the collection of the Palace Museum in Beijing, which measures 6.3 inches (16 cm) in height. Another similar-sized Qianlong yellow jade elephant-ear vase, measuring 8 inches (20.2 cm) in height, was sold at a Sotheby's auction in Hong Kong in May 2012 for a hammer price of HKD 15,220,000."
