The boulder is carved with the emaciated arhat seated upon rock base next to a buddhist sutra, with shoes below. His both arms crossed, wearing loose robe exposing his naked body, the face with satisfying expression flanked by elongated ears, all framed within rocky grotto, the upper right rock inscribed with inscription of Imperial poem praising the Arhat, possibly the Eighth Arhat Vajraputra out of the Sixteen Arhats, accompanied with carved fitted hardwood stand. The stone is of finely polished smooth white tone. Qing Dynasty Qianlong period.
Provenance: Private collection, Beverly Hills, California 本品巧雕羅漢坐於岩洞之內,頭頂起丘,濃眉瞪目,闊鼻大耳,面帶微笑。羅漢全身瘦骨嶙峋,雙臂交叉,雙腿呈自在式坐於岩石之上,衣褶流暢,垂然落地,一本經卷置於地面。羅漢神態清心寡慾,頗有怡然自得之趣,意境深遠,猶如集天下之靈,存聚於斯。岩壁外側刻禦提詩文,結合人物刻畫可推斷出本羅漢山子所雕為第五位諾距羅尊者。羅漢為佛陀得道弟子,證一切智,六根清靜,修成正果。此器應受清代院體畫的影響,細節刻畫十分細膩,層次分明,採新疆和闐白玉籽料而琢,不惜工本,玉料潔白無瑕,包漿古潤,為乾隆時期玉雕人物山子中的代表之作,不可多得。類似玉雕羅漢山子可參考一尊較大白玉羅漢山子,售於香港佳士得,2016年5月,成交價HKD 9,640,000,以及一尊青玉刻詩文羅漢山子,藏於紐約大都會藝術博物館。 來源:洛杉磯比佛利山莊(Beverly Hills)私人舊藏
