藏傳佛教的信奉神系龐雜，除了信奉佛、菩薩外，上師是較為特殊的一類。在佛教密宗的修行中，上師作為佛徒與尊神之間的橋樑，只有依靠上師的灌頂和口傳身授，普通佛徒的修行才有可能成功，因此各派都要求弟子對上師要如同對佛一樣，需身、語、意三皈依。此上師像圓面大耳，雙眼凝視遠方，額寬鼻廣，給人睿智莊嚴之感。右手作觸地印，跏趺坐於蒲團座之上。整體人物表情的刻畫細膩，內外衣著樣式、衣紋鏨刻等細節及製作工藝堪稱完美，實為西藏上師造像的經典之作。
