The origin of hair embroidery art can be traced back to Tang dynasty at the height of Buddhism in China when the devout female followers would worship the Bodhisattva deities by handcrafting the Bodhisattva figures on silk with their own hair. The earliest existing hair embroidery piece is said to be in the collection of British Museum from Southern Song dynasty. The present piece depicts a magnificent scene of Sukhavati with various stitching techniques. Each of the numerous bodhisattva figures is intricately sewed to present the smallest details and the background setting is stitched in to represent a heavenly peaceful scene. One can image the extraordinary work, patience, and creativity attributed to this accomplishment of this magnificent work can only be done by a devout Buddhist artist.
