常服為清代帝后穿用較多的一類服飾，既含禮服之性質，又具有吉服之作用，且多用於嚴肅、莊重的場合。在皇帝舉行的經筵大典、喪期內的吉慶節日、節日期間先皇帝后的忌辰，帝后穿著常服，以示肅穆而虔誠，因此常服袍皆以素織暗花緞為料。用時與常服褂配套穿著，亦可單獨穿用。
